Titans Struggle Continues: Will Levis Faces Criticism for Costly Turnovers

The Tennessee Titans are off to a challenging start in the 2024 NFL season, now sitting at an 0-2 record following a 24-17 defeat against the New York Jets in Week 2. The game, marked by pivotal errors, has drawn attention to the risk-taking quarterback Will Levis, who has faced criticism and introspection early in the season.

Costly Turnovers Plague Titans

A key moment in the recent matchup came when Levis threw a pass to Tyjae Spears that resulted in a fumble, a mistake the Jets quickly capitalized on. Offensive coordinator Callahan minced no words postgame, labeling the decision as "dumb." This public criticism highlights the growing frustration within the Titan’s camp as turnovers continue to hinder their progress.

Levis is known for his daring approach on the field, a trait that has both impressed and concerned coaches and analysts alike. With three interceptions and two fumbles in just the first two games, his playing style is under intense scrutiny.

Levis Under Pressure

In addressing the costly fumble, Levis did not shy away from admitting his fault. "He told us straight off, he's not a yeller and screamer, but he can be and there's certain situations that allow for that, and that definitely was one of those situations," Levis said. "I didn't bat an eye at it. I took the coaching."

Levis acknowledged the internal struggle and the self-criticism accompanying his in-game errors. "I was yelling at myself in my head the same way he was yelling at me," he revealed. "I know it's an emotional response that we all have after things like that. We were right back to it, and he had confidence in me on the next play taking that shot. That was cool to feel, coming back on the field after that turnover, even though we had another one after that. I don't have any problem with how he handled himself."

A Track Record of Boldness

Levis' inclination for taking risks dates back to his college career, a factor many believe contributed to his fall to the 33rd overall selection in the 2023 NFL Draft. "I think a lot of people, when they hear gunslinger, they think about recklessness. I definitely feel like I was a little too reckless in my college career and tried to make some throws that I would want to take back," Levis admitted. "I changed that mentality a bit in my play last year. Just realizing at the level that I was playing at where I had to be that much more careful with the ball. I was proud of how I was able to protect it a little more than I did in my college years."

Future Aspirations and Immediate Challenges

Despite the early setbacks, the Titans remain steadfast in their ambitions for the season. "The goal for the 2024 Titans is to make a playoff run," Levis stated firmly. The aspiration serves as a beacon amid the turmoil, though achieving it will require immediate improvements, especially in ball security and decision-making.

Up next, the Titans will host the Green Bay Packers this Sunday. The Packers will be without their starting quarterback Jordan Love, sidelined due to injury, with Malik Willis stepping in. This quarterback change might present the Titans with a strategic advantage, though much will depend on their ability to capitalize on opportunities and minimize self-inflicted mistakes.

Levis' response to both external criticism and personal reflection suggests a level of maturity and determination to learn and adapt. His ability to balance his natural daring with the necessary caution will be crucial in reversing the Titans' fortunes and pushing toward their playoff ambitions.

The team and its fan base hope that these growing pains are temporary, and that the combination of Levis' talent and adaptability will soon yield a turn in their season. As the Titans prepare for their next game, all eyes will be on Levis to see if he can strike the right balance and lead his team to their first victory of the season.
