Eagles Sign Mekhi Becton Amid Steen's Injury

The Philadelphia Eagles have inked Mekhi Becton, a strategic move designed to bolster their offensive line depth. Initially recruited to act as a swing tackle behind starters Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson, Becton has rapidly found himself filling a crucial role due to unforeseen circumstances.

Steen's Injury Opens Door for Becton

Tyler Steen's untimely ankle injury has created a vacancy at the Eagles' starting right guard position. During his first practice with the first team, Becton showcased his versatility and skill, lining up as the right guard and effectively neutralizing defensive tackle Jalen Carter during intense 11-on-11 drills.

Becton's ability to step into this role is especially notable considering he did not practice during the initial days of training camp. Instead, the 6-foot-7 tackle used his time on the sidelines wisely, staying engaged and learning from his teammates. His dedication has not gone unnoticed.

Coaches and Teammates on Becton's Adaptability

Eagles coach Nick Sirianni voiced his optimism about Becton's integration into the team, especially alongside veteran Lane Johnson. "I'm looking forward to that. Mekhi has had a good camp so far and looking forward to getting him some work next to Lane [Johnson] and continuing to work forward with that," Sirianni remarked.

Landon Dickerson, the Eagles' left guard, also praised Becton's adaptability and readiness. "I think Mekhi is doing great. He's had to bounce around a few positions. We had some guys get banged up. Nothing different than what happens during the season, right?" Dickerson commented. His praise didn't stop there. "We have a guy that can swing at both guard and tackle, can play both guard spots. That's a lot of value in the NFL. He's able to play four out of five positions."

A Team Player from the Start

Becton himself has embraced his role with a team-first mentality. "The first few days he wasn't practicing, but he was definitely in my ear the whole time and telling me what I was doing wrong. He's been a great help," Becton noted about the support he's received since joining the Eagles.

Demonstrating a readiness to contribute in any capacity, Becton added, "I know I'm not, like that wasn't the thing when they signed me here. I don't have to get ready. I just know when my number is called I'm always gonna be ready. If I can start, I'll start. If I don't, I'll be ready."

Uncertainty around Steen's Absence

The Eagles have yet to disclose the anticipated duration of Tyler Steen's absence, leaving a question mark over how long Becton might be needed in the starting lineup. However, his seamless transition to right guard demonstrates that he is more than capable of stepping up when needed.

Even as a key component of the Eagles' second-team offensive line, Becton's readiness to fill multiple positions adds valuable depth to a team with high aspirations for the season ahead. His rapid adjustment is a promising sign for the Eagles, who will need all hands on deck to navigate the grueling NFL schedule.

As the Eagles continue their preparation, Becton's performance and versatility will undoubtedly be a point of focus for the coaching staff. If his early showings are any indication, Becton looks poised to make significant contributions, regardless of where he lines up on the field.
