Becton Embraces Diverse Role with Eagles amid Injury Setbacks

In a surprising offseason move, Mekhi Becton found a new home with the Philadelphia Eagles after signing with the team in May. Known for his tenure with the New York Jets, where he faced challenges of injuries and inconsistent play, Becton is now viewed as a potential valuable asset to the Eagles’ offensive line.

The initial plan was for Becton to serve as a backup tackle for Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson. However, the Eagles’ coaching staff quickly identified an additional role for him in the interior line. Becton stepped up amid the absences of key players, particularly Landon Dickerson, who missed mandatory minicamp due to personal reasons and was later sidelined by a lacerated toe. Becton quickly filled the gap at left guard, showcasing his adaptability.

"I know I'm not, like that wasn't the thing when they signed me here. I don't have to get ready. I just know when my number is called I'm always gonna be ready," Becton said, underscoring his readiness to step into any role the team requires.

Adjusting to the Guard Position

Becton's transition to guard has been a key focus during the Eagles’ training camp. While he competes with Tyler Steen for the starting right guard spot, the shift from tackle to guard is no small feat. Becton acknowledges that playing guard demands quicker decision-making and faster reactions compared to playing tackle.

"Guard, it happens way faster. You don't have time to say, you just gotta settle with what you gotta settle with. Your feet don't have time to set up what you gotta set up. It's real faster. It's right away. Your hands gotta be ready to fire right away," Becton explained. "At tackle, you got a little bit of time to see what [the defense] is doing. You have time to figure out if you're in the right spot or not."

Despite the differences, Becton remains optimistic about his ability to adapt to the new role. "It's an adjustment, but it's not a hard adjustment. I can do it," he confidently stated. His impressive arm length, which stands out compared to typical defensive tackles, provides a significant advantage in this transition.

Competing for a Starting Spot

Becton's journey with the Eagles is just beginning, and the coming weeks will be crucial for solidifying his place on the team. Training camp and preseason games will offer him the opportunity to prove his mettle under pressure. The Eagles' staff will be closely watching to see how Becton's performance develops and if he can effectively challenge for a starting position.

"I feel like I don't really know the disadvantages yet, but the advantages would be my arm length compared to defensive tackles and stuff like that," Becton noted. His adaptability will be tested as he competes to fill the starting right guard position, and his performance in these high-stakes scenarios will be pivotal in determining his role with the team.

For Becton, the key to success lies in his readiness and willingness to take on whatever role the team needs. "If I can start, I'll start. If I don't, I'll be ready," he said, highlighting his team-first mentality. "I just learn from everybody all day every day. It's a fun thing to do."

Looking Ahead

As the Eagles prepare for the upcoming season, Becton’s journey from backup tackle to potential starting guard will be a narrative to watch. His experience with the Jets, coupled with his renewed focus and adaptability, positions him as a crucial player for the Eagles’ offensive line. Becton's determination to be ready at a moment's notice could prove invaluable as the team navigates the challenges ahead.

"I don't know what I'm gonna be when I come in here. Once I step on the field, I know I gotta be ready for whatever," Becton affirmed, encapsulating the mindset that will define his tenure with the Philadelphia Eagles. Whether as a starting guard or a versatile backup, Becton's readiness and resilience will be key to his and the team’s success.
