Hawks and Suns Finalize Trade for Roddy and Liddell

In a continued effort to shuffle their roster, the Atlanta Hawks have acquired David Roddy from the Phoenix Suns in exchange for E.J. Liddell. This transaction further solidifies the Hawks’ strategy of refining their team composition ahead of the new season.

This move marks the second time in less than a month that E.J. Liddell finds himself packing his bags. Initially brought on board by Atlanta from Ohio State in a July 6 multi-player trade, Liddell initially came as part of a deal that sent the versatile Dejounte Murray to New Orleans. The comprehensive package that delivered Liddell to Atlanta also included two first-round draft picks, highlighting the investment the Hawks had in the young forward.

E.J. Liddell’s journey in the NBA has been a whirlwind. Drafted in the second round by the New Orleans Pelicans in 2022, Liddell's talent was undeniable but his playtime was limited. During his short tenure with the Hawks, Liddell participated in just eight games, struggling to carve out a significant role. His average of 7.8 points and 4.0 rebounds per game in the summer league, though commendable, wasn't enough to secure a permanent spot in Atlanta's rotation.

Roddy's Promise and Performance

David Roddy’s arrival in Atlanta comes with a promising profile. Selected as the 23rd overall pick by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2022 NBA Draft, Roddy soon found his way to Memphis before splitting his rookie season between Memphis and Phoenix. During the 2023-24 season, Roddy made an impressive impact, starting in 13 out of 65 contests. He managed to average 6.5 points and 3.2 rebounds per game, scoring in double figures in 18 different games. Roddy also set a personal milestone by matching his career-high with 10 rebounds in two separate matches.

When granted a starting position, Roddy's performance further flourished. He posted averages of 11.1 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, showcasing his ability to contribute effectively on both ends of the court. His summer league stint with the Phoenix team saw him start five games, during which he averaged 14.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game, underscoring his versatile skill set and readiness to take on a more significant role with the Hawks.

Strategic Acquisitions

As part of the larger deal that initially landed Liddell in Atlanta, the Hawks also welcomed Dyson Daniels, Larry Nance Jr., and Cody Zeller. This influx of talent suggests that the Hawks are building a well-rounded squad with a mix of experience and potential. In addition to these players, Atlanta is set to receive a 2025 first-round pick and a conditional 2027 first-round pick, further bolstering their future assets.

For the Phoenix Suns, this trade offers a chance to redefine their roster as well. E.J. Liddell’s potential, though not fully realized in Atlanta, could find a new expression in Phoenix’s system.

Looking Forward

This trade reflects Atlanta’s commitment to continuous improvement and strategic foresight. With the acquisition of Roddy, the Hawks have added a player who has shown considerable promise and the capability to contribute more significantly when given the opportunity. As the new season approaches, Atlanta’s fans have reasons to be optimistic about the team’s evolving roster and the potential impact of these strategic acquisitions.
