Walker Buehler Returns to the Injured List
In a disappointing turn of events, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Walker Buehler has been placed on the injured list due to right hip inflammation. This marks another setback for the talented right-hander, who has faced significant challenges over the past couple of years, including missing most of 2022 and the entirety of 2023 following a second Tommy John surgery.
Buehler was a cornerstone of the Dodgers' rotation from 2018 to 2021, winning 39 games and maintaining an ERA that never exceeded 3.44. However, his attempt to return to form in 2024 has been met with considerable difficulties.
2024 Struggles After Comeback
Since his comeback on May 8, 2024, Buehler has struggled to recapture his pre-surgery prowess. Over eight starts, he has posted a 1-4 record with a troubling 5.84 ERA. His latest outing, a start in Colorado, epitomized his struggles as he took a line drive off the hip yet chose to remain in the game. Unfortunately, his performance suffered as a result; he surrendered seven runs on seven hits, including two home runs.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts acknowledged that Buehler's hip had been sore for several starts. "I think he's a little bit sort of finding himself again. I think he's still in search mode. So, as he's getting back to health, I think for the mind and some clarity, I think this will be a good thing," said Roberts. He hopes the stint on the injured list will allow Buehler to regroup physically and mentally.
Bobby Miller Activated
To fill the gap left by Buehler, the Dodgers have activated Bobby Miller. Miller, who has not pitched since April 10 due to right shoulder inflammation, is entering his second major league season. Despite his recent injury, Miller has shown promise, compiling a 1-1 record with a 5.40 ERA in three starts this year.
Miller had an impressive rookie season in 2023, demonstrating the depth of talent within the Dodgers' roster. His return is timely, adding much-needed depth to a pitching staff that has been beleaguered by injuries.
Looking Forward
Despite his recent struggles, Buehler's career statistics remain impressive. Over seven seasons, he has a remarkable 47-20 record and a 3.17 ERA. The Dodgers organization is hopeful that with adequate rest and recovery, Buehler can return to his top form.
Injuries are an inevitable part of Major League Baseball, but the Dodgers have consistently demonstrated their depth and flexibility in overcoming these challenges. Bobby Miller stepping up in Buehler's absence exemplifies this resilience.
All eyes will be on Buehler's recovery and eventual return to the mound. He remains dedicated to contributing to the team’s success. "It sucks to feel kind of invaluable, or like you're hampering your team. At the end of the day, we really like our team and want to be ready for the end of the year. And I'm going to do whatever I need to do to feel like I can help our team at the end of the year, and do everything in my power to be valuable enough to be on those rosters," Buehler stated.
The Dodgers eagerly await the return of their cornerstone pitcher to help strengthen their roster for the latter part of the season. For now, the team will rely on their depth and the capabilities of pitchers like Bobby Miller to navigate through this challenging period.
