Oneil Cruz's Transition: From Shortstop to Center Field
In a significant move for the Pittsburgh Pirates, the team has announced that Oneil Cruz will be transitioning from his usual role as shortstop to center field. The decision, confirmed by manager Derek Shelton, marks a bold new direction for the 25-year-old player who has shown both promise and inconsistency in his previous position.
Cruz’s defensive performance at shortstop has been a mixed bag, reflected in the statistical metrics and underscored by the 24 errors he's committed this season. Notably, half of these errors have been made since July 21, drawing attention to his defensive struggles. However, Cruz's offensive contributions have been solid, boasting a respectable .265/.324/.468 batting line along with a 120 OPS+ for the season.
Despite his struggles in the field, Cruz has demonstrated versatility and potential in his hitting capabilities. He has logged 29 doubles, three triples, 18 home runs, 63 RBIs, 57 runs, and 17 steals, contributing to a 2.5 WAR this season. Such statistics illustrate that Cruz’s value to the team remains substantial, even if his fielding has left room for improvement.
Interestingly, Cruz has never played center field at any level of professional baseball. His experience in the outfield is limited to 80 innings in Triple-A left field and a single inning in left field in the major leagues. Nonetheless, the Pirates are optimistic that his athleticism and strong arm will allow him to make a successful transition to center field.
Derek Shelton elaborated on the rationale behind the move: “Cruz will remain a center fielder for the foreseeable future,” he affirmed. “Cruz’s season-ending injury last season was a factor in the decision.” Cruz's 2022 season came to an abrupt halt in April when he broke his leg during a collision at home plate with Seby Zavala, an incident that undoubtedly influenced this strategic shift.
The timing of this transition comes as the Pirates have essentially fallen out of the playoff race, having recently endured a 10-game losing streak earlier in the month. While the team has found some respite by winning four of their last six games, the aim is to harness Cruz's physical attributes in a way that benefits both him and the team long-term.
Another factor contributing to Cruz's shift to center field is the recent injuries affecting the Pirates' lineup. Nick Gonzales suffered a groin injury in late July, further complicating the team’s infield options and prompting a reevaluation of player positions. As of late August, Cruz had been filling the role of designated hitter, but this temporary solution did not fully exploit his athletic prowess and defensive potential.
“Cruz’s move to center field aims to maximize his strong arm and athleticism,” Shelton explained. The Pirates are betting that Cruz's natural attributes will enable him to adapt quickly to patrolling the expansive outfield, a position that demands speed, good judgment, and a powerful throwing arm.
